Brief
Communications
|
Brief communications are to encourage a rapid sharing of new results that may not meet the standards of a research paper (i.e. allelism tests not completed, map locations only approximate, experiments lacking an appropriate control). Brief communications will not be subjected to peer review, although the editor reserves the right to screen papers for appropriateness and to review submissions for clarity and brevity. Such submissions will be limited to approximately one page and should be narrowly focused. Otherwise, the format of brief communications (tables, references, etc.) should correspond to that of a research paper. Publication of a brief communication in Pisum Genetics does not preclude publication of a full paper on the same subject in a later issue or in another journal.
As has been the case for volumes 29 through 34 of Pisum Genetics, an electronic copy of Volume 35 will be found at http://hermes.bionet.nsc.ru/pg/ thanks to the efforts of Dr. Serge Rosov and staff at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk, Russia. The editor also wishes to extend his thanks to the individuals who served as referees for manuscripts submitted to this volume of Pisum Genetics. The referees returned reviews promptly with constructive suggestions to the authors. Cathy Weeden prepared the final page layout and worked with the printers to ensure a quality product.
The financial report for the period October 1, 2002 to September .30, 2003 is presented below. The Pisum Genetics Association remains on sound financial footing. The relatively low income from subscriptions is due to the Editor not sending out a mailing in June requesting payment of annual dues and calling for submission of manuscripts. Instead, the annual dues request accompanies the mailing of Volume 35. As there were sufficient funds in the account to cover the printing and mailing costs of Volume 35, the Editor felt sending the annual dues request with the journal would be more efficient, but the Editor is open to suggestions regarding this change. A survey of the Coordinating Committee and other members indicated satisfaction with the $15.00 per year annual dues, and a change does not appear to be necessary in the near future. Printing costs dropped significantly for Volume 34 as a result in a change of printing firms, and mailing costs dropped slightly due to the use of bulk mailing to some locations. Although income for subscriptions should be higher this coming year, interest income will be lower because the time deposit earning 5.9% will mature in January 2004. Current interest rates are much lower.
