Pisum collection of Professor W. Gottschalk

Samples of the remaining stocks developed during the working career of Professor W. Gottschalk at the University of Bonn have been moved to the John Innes Institute. The collection comprises 352 stocks including 68 induced mutants from his work using X-rays and neutrons. The original cultivar used was the old German variety "Dippes Gelbe Viktoria" bred by Dippes of Quedlinburg. The remaining 284 stocks are recombinants between mutants or between mutants and other genetic stocks.

The primary characters on which the initial selection of mutants was based were flowering time, internode length and fasciation. These categories were further divided into a number of sub-groups of differing penetrance and expressivity. A number of other mutants of interest were also developed in this background including chlorophyll, waxlcss, foliar and flower character mutants. Many recombinants are of interest for the specific gene combinations they carry which are not in general circulation.

The many years spent in developing and characterising such a wide range of lines from a common genetic background makes this an important genetic resource. Over the years, however, a number of stocks which he distributed to others have been lost from this collection. It is our intention that this collection be kept intact and extended to include those lines that have been lost. In order to help with this I would appreciate a listing of any such stocks that people might have. All correspondence will be gratefully received.
