GARDEN PEA VARIETIES

Four new varieties developed at the New York State Agricultural
Experiment Station, Cornell University, are now being marketed
commercially. Each is intended for use in the home- or market-garden as
a source of fresh green peas.
'MAESTRO' is dwarf, robust and prolific; it reaches prime edible
maturity about 3-4 days after 'Progress No. 9' or 'Knight'. Because
Maestro has long, moderately narrow pods (ca 10.5 x 1.5), the plants
semble an early flowering version of 'Green Arrow' (= 'Greenshaft') ,
although the latter cultivar does not figure into the parentage of
Maestro. Maestro is resistant to Pea Enation Mosaic Virus (PEMV), Bean
Yellow Mosaic Virus (BYMV), powdery mildew (Ervsiphe polygoni) but is
susceptible to common wilt.
GRENADIER' has a dwarf, compact vine; it flowers early but reaches
prime maturity a day or two later than Progress No. 9 or Knight. The
pods are long and broad (ca 10.0 x 2.0 cm) and well filled with large,
high quality peas. Grenadier pods probably are well suited to shipping.
The variety is resistant to PEMV, BYMV, powdery mildew and common wilt
(Fusarium oxvsporum f. pisi race 1) .
'OLYMPIA' is dwarf and early, maturing about the same time as or
slightly earlier than Progress No. 9. Pods are long but not as broad as
in Grenadier. The variety is resistant to PEMV, BYMV and powdery
mi1dew.
' EARLY SNAP' is a dwarf, mid-early (12-13 nodes to flower)
edible-podded variety possessing the n gene, hence a so-called
"snap-pea" type. Resistant to BYMV.
