CHECKLIST OF BUTTERFLY SPECIES RECORDED IN CAMBODIA

compiled by GERARD CHARTIER and OLEG KOSTERIN

from published sources and unpublished internet reports

Last revised on 09.11.2020

The checklist is complied from as broad sources as possible but these are of different quality. First of all these are scientific papers based on dissected specimens, most of which are summarised (completely before 2010, later fragmentarily) in Yutaka Inayoshi’s site ‘A Check List of Butterflies in Indo-China, chiefly from Thailand, Laos and Vietnam’ (http://yutaka.it-n.jp) as we used as the basic secondary source of the scientific information. We also used internet resources (enumerated below) where butterflies were identified by photos – either by ourselves or we revised the identifications, nevertheless some misidentifications are not excluded. There are even three papers in a scientific journal but based on photographic identifications (Kosterin, 2019a, Acta Biologica Sibirica 5(1): 84-105; 2019b, Acta Biologica Sibirica 5(4): 21-37; 2020, Acta Biologica Sibirica 6: 293-338). So the checklist is inclusive and can contain few species in error. Nevertheless, it is important to have at least such a preliminary checklist for such badly underexplored but species-rich country as Cambodia.

The following codes are used to indicate the sources and novelty of records. When the record appears in published literature, the codes are given in uppercase. When the records are sourced from the authors’ personal websites, Facebook posts or iNaturalist observations, lowercase codes are used:

C, c - recorded by Gerard Chartier in his checklists of the butterflies of Tatai Commune of Kog Kong Province (https://geenature.com/checklists/butterflies/), and/or his observations with iNaturalist. Just two records are published in Chartier (2019, Cambodian Journal of Natural History 2019: 121-127);

d – present in observations by Leslie Day at iNaturalist.org;

ds - recorded by Don Snow on iNaturalist.

I - present in Yutaka Inayoshi’s site ‘A Check List of Butterflies in Indo-China, chiefly from Thailand, Laos and Vietnam’;

j - recorded by Dani Jump either in the ‘Natural Cambodia’ Facebook group or on his ‘Bees Unlimited’ facebook page and website.

K - recorded by Oleg Kosterin in three published papers Kosterin (2019a, b, 2020) (also present in his site (http://pisum.bionet.nsc.ru/kosterin/exotic/cambodia.htm) and/or his observations with iNaturalist);

M - present in the paper by Monastyrskii, A.L., Yago M., Odagiri K. (2011) Butterfly assemblages (Lepidoptera, Papilionoidea) of the Cardamom Mountains, Southwest Cambodia. Cambodian Journal of Natural History 2011: 122-130 (an important source, only partly taken into account in Y. Inayoshi’s site);

O - present in some of the papers by H. Onodera (2007, Yadoriga, 215,17-36; 2008, Yuzuriha, 39, 54-61; 2009 Yuzuriha, 40, 62-68) if not referred to in Y. Inayoshi’s site;

s - recorded by Eddie Smith and shown in ‘Natural Cambodia’ Facebook group;

ss – recorded by Sikol San’s team and posted in the ‘Butterflies of Cambodia’ Facebook Group.

* - the first report for Cambodia in literature
